Affordable Housing

I am committed to keeping Shaker Heights a diverse community, including socioeconomic diversity. 

Every person deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Yet, too many families, seniors, and young professionals struggle with rising rents, home prices, rising property taxes, rising homeowners insurance due to environmental changes, and a lack of available housing. I am committed to prioritizing housing affordability by increasing access to quality and affordable housing.

My Plan for Affordable Housing:

1. Expanding Housing Supply

• Invest in the development of affordable housing through public-private partnerships. Projects such as Arcadia, where a developer reserves a specific number of units as affordable housing, should be prioritized and should be the housing model in Shaker Heights. 

• Support zoning reforms encouraging more diverse housing options and tax abatements for constructing multi-family and universal-design dwelling units.

• Continue infill housing and expand it to additional neighborhoods in Shaker Heights.

• Explore additional options for tax abatement partnerships, such as with the Cuyahoga Landbank. 

2. Reducing Housing Costs 

• Explore the benefits and disadvantages of income discrimination legislation in Shaker Heights.

• Work closely with the Shaker Heights School Board and the Shaker Heights Library Board to understand the timeline of potential tax increases and be transparent in sharing that information with residents.

3. Protecting Renters and Homeowners

• Continue to explore modifications to Shaker Heights’ Point of Sale process.

• Continue providing homeowners access to programs like Home Resource Repair Center. 

4. Investing in Sustainable, Livable Communities

• Continue to explore Managed Landscape legislation. 

• Advocate for new developments to include green spaces and sustainability features, such as solar panels.

• Promote energy-efficient and climate-resilient housing solutions through programs such as rebates. 

Housing is a fundamental right, not a privilege. I am dedicated to creating a future where every resident can afford to live in Shaker Heights. We can build a stronger, more inclusive, affordable Shaker Heights together.
